Note: The follow up drabble is set firmly in the world of Ted Chiang's short story Story of Your Life from Stories of Your Life and Others (which I heartily recommend to those of you who like SF short stories). In that story aliens contact Earth and their language allows those who learn it to see the future. However each person sees an optimal future and so makes no attempt to change it.
