No Pain, No Gain

Ryan could still hear Connor crying softly.  He coiled the whip he’d used on his young slave.  Connor had been making good progress, but apparently, wherever he’d come from, this week was the anniversary of his Ryan’s death. 

He’d had to resort to the whip when Connor had woken him up crying for the fifth night in a row. 

The disturbance was unacceptable.  They both needed sleep.  Beating hadn’t worked; the whip was a last resort.  Perhaps a night in his old cell instead of their bed would jolt him. 

Ryan hoped the saying no pain no gain was true.
