Challenge: “Grateful”
Stephen knew that he should have been grateful. He’d expected to die in the cage room, after all, torn limb from limb for his sins. But the soldiers arrived at the eleventh hour and shot the creatures off of him, dragging him free from the carnage. They’d rushed him to the A&E and ultimately saved his miserable life, despite all odds.
Laid up in the hospital, though, half-blinded, wracked with agony and looking down at the bandaged stumps where his hand and foot ought to have been, Stephen didn’t feel gratitude.
He half-wondered why they’d even bothered at all.
