Summary: Caroline Steel, meet the ARC. ARC, meet Caroline. She’s new, so be nice to her. Lorraine Wickes performs an introduction.
Author's Notes: I... have no idea where this came from. At all. I was planning on writing something about Helen.

 

         
 

   Lorraine Wickes is the most competent person at the ARC. There are few who can keep up with Connor Temple’s coding, manage Lester and name nearly all of the ARC personnel off the top of her head.

 

            Lorraine’s a people person- that’s why she’s handling this: there aren’t many people in the ARC who are friendly to this conscript. Everyone knows that she was forced to join their world of dinosaurs, deceit and derring-do, and they know why, too.

 

            Lorraine glances sideways at the young woman, who is staring, open-mouthed, at her new workplace. “Welcome to the ARC, Miss Steel.”

Well, you never know... Anyway, the fic is based round the idea that Helen was (in her own twisted kind of way) actually telling the truth when she said she was lonely; she goes looking for love or friendship and because of the way she is, the fact that she always has her own agenda, she inevitably screws it up. Nick wouldn't follow her lead, Stephen refused to join her on her time-travelling adventures, you get the picture. What she wants is a partner in crime- not necessarily a boyfriend or whatever, but someone to teach about the past and surviving in it. Liz makes her curious by being immediately suspicious of her in Salisbury Plain and then chasing her back to the anomaly; she checks on Liz's background and personality, and comes to the conclusion that she could train Liz to be the perfect second-in-command. Liz is abstracted from her own proper time while out for a run, and spends a month with Helen: Liz, being alone and semi-weaponless in a strange land with a very strange woman, is obliged not to run away. Helen teaches her a lot about the anomalies, uses her mysterious contacts to find Liz things like her own actual walking boots, jeans, and a decent knife, and teaches her about surviving in different times. Liz, of course, takes to all this like a duck to water, but she still really wants to go home. After the month is up, she and Helen are quits because they've both saved each other's life exactly the same number of times, and Liz asks Helen straight out to let her go. Helen does. Of course, it's not as simple as that: there are months of travelling through anomalies ahead of Liz, and then she goes through what she thinks is the right one- but where's Professor Cutter, why has Jenny changed her name to Claudia and ditched the makeup, and who is this person called Captain Ryan?

What do you think? I also have a couple of other ideas; Jamie death!fic, and Christmas!fic.

Hmm I really like the plot. It's hard to find fics where Helen is not either an evil psycho or the always misunderstood innocent victim. It would make a really good change and give plenty of space for exploration of both characters and growth for Liz.
On the other hand OMG Lester is going to be spastic. Is she going to go back to a universe where she is still Lester's daughter (and fine I have one track mind but are Lyle and Lester still together?) and how are all the changes going to affect her? *surreptitiously sharpens poking stick*
And YAY You write Artemis Fowl? Brilliant *wanders off to look*

I'm not entirely sure that Helen hasn't had issues right from the very start, even before the whole I Ran Off To The Permian And All My Husband Got Was My Ex-Boyfriend thing. And it would be so much fun. And I'd get to write S1 alternative-scenario, as in, in Jenny-Lewis world Nick was killed not Ryan and Ryan made his way back to the wrong anomaly, i.e., the one with Claudia on the other side. Basically, Nick and Ryan swapped worlds. Which helps Liz a lot, because people (like Claudia and Ryan) believe her.

Yes, Lester is going to go absolutely mad. And yes, Lyle and Lester are still together; by this point they will have been together for a while. And as an example of how the changes will affect her, she's unlikely to be picky about food ever again. Months of eating dinosaur will do that to a girl.

Hmmm with that premise it sounds even more interesting than before. I love the idea of alternative universes and what if, which is one of the many reasons Primeval has been one of my favourite fandoms since it comes with an inbuilt reset button.
LOL Yes I could see how a lot of things won't squeak her ever again :)

I thought it would be interesting. :) I worked it out after I had most of the original premise sorted. And lol, yeah, very little bothers you after weeks of time-travelling! I can so see this happening-

RYAN: ... What are you eating?
LIZ: *shrug* It's edible. It's not dinosaur. It's fine by me.
