A/N: OC City, like most of my writing lately: Liz –not named- is mine, but Jacobs, Stringer, Robinson, Blade –not named- Lyle and Sayed all belong to their respective owners. References made to lsellersfic’s amazing siegefic, The Night Before Christmas.

Good is being happy for an old friend.

Good is looking Jon Lyle up at his swanky new London address and realising Lyle’s moved in with his boyfriend, tripping over the teenager who also inhabits the place, and realising that Lyle’s sort-of stepdaughter is a scary bitch. It’s telling Lyle he has ‘fucking stepkids!’, seeing Lyle wince, and hearing him say: “Yeah. It’s not that bad. If you don’t actually think about it, it’s quite cool.” It’s nosing around the photographs on the mantelpiece, and discovering that Lyle has a family which loves him. He deserves it, the lucky bastard.
 
Bad is losing contact with an old friend.

He never meant to lose contact with Jon Lyle when he joined UNIT; it just sort of happened. They were always good mates right from when they joined, and they knew each others’ friends too –Ryan, Jacobs, Stringer and Robinson, and that one with a thing about knives- but once he’d joined UNIT, that had ended. Hamza only realises how badly he’s drifted away from Jon when he hears on the grapevine that Jon’s friend Ryan has been killed. There’d been a time when he’d have been the first person Jon told.

Ugly is realising you’re on the opposite side to an old friend.

Invading the Anomaly Research Centre on Christmas Eve was a terrible op from a professional point of view, and from the personal even lousier- although he had got to tackle Jenny Lewis to the floor, something he’d like to do more often. But the worst bit had been coming face to face with Jon Lyle, just doing his job exactly the same as Hamza always did, and finding out that, if it had come to a fight, Jon could have put a bullet through him without thinking twice.

Oh wow! I'm in awe. I love these so much. My alter-ego will be adding them to her memories.

The Lyle-Hamza friendship thing was such a last minute graft onto the siegefic (thanks fifi!) that I never got to explore the angst involved. You've nailed and filled a real gap here.

I suppose I really ought to go add Hamza to the OC thread now...

I'm now hoping you know about the CCF. In particular what sort of weaponry might Liz be trained with?

My knowledge of the CCF is relatively limited -I didn't join when they came recruiting, I was a suspicious little thirteen-year-old with very little inclination for drill that wasn't self-inflicted- and my brother is not available for grilling as he's off on a sleepover, but Wikipedia covers all manner of sins. According to it, all cadets start off learning to use a .22 Number 8 Rifle or L98A1 5.56 mm Cadet General Purpose rifle, the latter being like an SA80 only not semi or automatic loading, and later on the L86 LSW, the L85A2 rifle, and the L81 Cadet Target Rifle. She'd also know first aid, navigation and drill (according to little brother, there is lots of this and it is mind-numbingly dull) and, again according to Wikipedia- 'Army section cadets are able to specialise in various subjects such as signalling and infantry tactics, and are trained accordingly. The Army section also has "special to arm" courses, such as advanced weapons theory, Royal Signals training, and REME [Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers] courses. Royal Artillery Adventurous Training courses are often offered to cadets, usually through an Army Liaison Officer. These include parachuting and watersports training.' Liz is pretty keen on CCF- I leave it up to you and your plot as to what she's attended/specialised in, but it certainly wasn't REME.

It is very helpful indeed. Don't worry about it! I would have pumped my brother (usually called James for a pseudonym when I need to refer to him, sometimes Jamie, and I swear I only realised Jamie Lester's name was the same after the name had stuck, but he probably won't believe me if I tell him that: it would not be the first time I accidentally named an unfortunate character after him) for information, but he's not here.

Eeeeeee! I read these before work on Monday, i think, and never commented! Sorry!! They are utterly brilliant.
I love, love, love how you see Hamza and Lyle. It's poignant, and perfect, funny, too. The third one gives a real shiver. Excellent.
