"Was there something you wanted to tell me?" James Lester inquired softly.

"I'm sorry I left the towels on the floor and drank the last of the juice without replacing it."

Two swift smacks echoed in the bedroom. "And?"

"I'm sorry that I said you have bloody awful taste in modern art."

Another smack.

"Sorry I've doubled your dry cleaning bill and I'll replace that shirt, but I'm not sorry about how they got ruined."

Nick wiggled in anticipation.

"Cutter, this is supposed to be punishment, remember?" James' tone was fondly exasperated.

This time the apology wasn't at all convincing.
