*is typing madly* - Challenge 114: Past Challenges

I'm trying very hard to get as many of these drabbles done as I possibly can. O_O Tonight. Being sick has put a real damper on my attempts to get these written...I haven't had the energy or the concentration.

Here's 4 more for now! (EDIT: 11) I'm going to write til I fall asleep tonight...EDIT: The sick came back. I can't write anymore. D: Guess I'll have to wait for next challenge week!

Title: You Can't Hide...

Prompt: #7 Betrayal

Characters: Abby, Connor, Rex

Rating: PG

A/N: Followup to my drabble for #4 - Rex

Rex flew from perch to perch in the flat, never letting Abby get close enough to catch him. She couldn't figure out why the damn lizard kept flying away--he was normally happy to see her come home.

She finally caught up with him under Connor's bed, where he seemed perfectly happy to let her grab him. As she did so, though, she couldn't help but notice the periodicals tucked between the slats and the mattress...

Connor came home to find Abby waiting--fuming--on the couch, a stack of incriminating magazines next to her, and Rex on her shoulder. He groaned.

"Thanks a lot, mate."

Title: The Force
Prompt: #9 Star Wars
Characters: Nick/Stephen
Rating: PG

Stephen sat next to Nick in awkward silence. He was scared to death.

"I love you." He finally blurted out.

"I know," Nick replied evenly.

"You knew? I didn't think you--"

"I feel the conflict within you."

"...Nick? You OK?"

"Hey, its me." He touched Stephen's cheek. The younger man flinched, face filled with confusion. Quieter, Nick added, "I have you now." Stephen placed a hand over Nick's, smiling.

"--you scruffy-looking nerf-herder."

Stephen's face fell. "Are you seriously quoting Star Wars at me during my confession of love?"

Nick looked shocked, hurt. "I find your lack of faith disturbing!"

Stephen went back to the other end of the couch.

Title: Secrets
Prompt: #10 "Claudia Who?"
Characters: Lester, Claudia
Rating: R

"Knock, knock." Claudia rapped smartly on the door to Lester's office, announcing her entry. She was surprised to hear the man squeak back a reply.

"...who's there?"

"...Claudia."

Another barely cut-off squeak. "Claudia who?"

"Seriously, sir? Knock-knock jokes?" She made to open the door, but the handle wouldn't turn. "James, let me in."

"Claudia--" Another barely swallowed utterance that could have been a curse word--"who?" He repeated.

"I'm not in the mood for games, Lester."

She stalked away, frustrated. Lester breathed a sigh of relief as he relaxed back into his chair and glared down at Ryan, who was still unabashedly licking along the civil servant's cock.

Title: Expectation
Prompt: #11 Surprise
Characters: Nick/Helen
Rating: PG

Nick didn't know what he was expecting--maybe a cake and balloons, or a nice home-cooked meal with candles and Yorkshire pudding for dessert. Maybe at least a gift, something small and non-demonstrative--Helen knew he didn't like a fuss. What he wasn't expecting was a dark and empty house with only the oven light on and a note on the kitchen table that read, "Gone for a pint--HC." It made him a little sad. He didn't make a huge deal of his birthday but one thought maybe one's wife would.

He was married to Helen. It really shouldn't have been a surprise.

Title
: The Set-Up

Prompt: #12 Friends

Characters: Nick

Rating: PG

He knows he'll regret all this one day.

Nick Cutter doesn't let people get close. Not after Helen. The closer they are, the more power they have.

The more they can hurt you.

Friends are a luxury he can't afford and a threat he can't ignore. So he's not really sure why his living room is full of people who are chatting and laughing and tipping back beer and in general just enjoying each other's company, or why he's doing all those things along with them. It's a fragile ecosystem that can be torn apart all too easily.

For once, he doesn't actually mind.

Title: The Devil's in the Details
Prompt: #13 Camping
Characters: Jenny/Sarah
Rating: PG

Jenny hates camping. The feel of rocks digging in your back from a barely-filled air bed. The sounds of the animals and the forest at night, when you're always on the alert for a bear snuffling round your tent. The cold and the chill and the damp and the lack of proper facilities.

But when you're tucked into a sleeping bag next to Sarah at night--and when you're watching her be happy and carefree, having adventures that have nothing to do with anomalies and bureaucracy and prehistoric creatures, during the day--the rest of it doesn't seem quite so bad.

Not quite.

Title
: It's Not the Same

Prompt: #14 A Quiet Night In

Characters: Nick

Rating: PG
Spoilers: Vague 2.07

He used to love nights like this. There was nothing to do but sit around and talk quietly, to have games of chess and backgammon and sip at drinks. Nothing pressing, nothing urgent, when you could watch a movie or debate science and evolution and religion in the most genial of ways, and vent your frustrations--that weren't, not really--at the referees in the football match and then retire quietly to bed together.

He used to love nights like this, but that was before, and yelling at a television by yourself is just so sad and pathetic, and the bed is cold.

Title: Slipping Up
Prompt: #15 Oops!
Characters: Nick, Stephen
Rating: PG

It's the fifth time he's seen--what's his name, Hart?--drop a pile of papers in the hallway. It's the fifth time he's tutted sympathetically, but still rushed on, anxious to not be late for his next seminar, giving the kid a rueful wink when he finally sidles into the hall.

But it's the first time that the gangly youth winks back, and it sets him back--he barely keeps from stammering as he finishes roll and begins the lecture.

It's not until the sixth time, when he stops and helps and--Stephen!--smiles shyly at him, that he realizes that this clumsiness might have a purpose.

Title
: Defeated

Prompt: #16 This is Where You Duck

Characters: Stephen

Rating: PG

Stephen couldn't believe the audacity of the Special Forces crew. They'd grown frustrated with his accuracy with their entire arsenal over the months; he'd walked into more than one group of men discussing the "how to make Hart make an arse of himself" project.

Ego-boosting, but annoying.

But this? Honestly? The archaeopteryx called out from overhead, and he sighed as Ryan yelled, "Get on with it!"

As his projectile knocked the prehistoric bird from the air, he turned to give the group of SF men a triumphant grin--but it was cut short as the boomerang whistled back through the air, smacking him unconscious.

Title: Antics
Prompt: #17 Chat-up Lines
Characters: Stephen, Stephen/Ryan implied
Rating: R

It wasn't really Stephen's fault he was the ARC's "bicycle". Sure, he'd slept with three-quarters of the Special Forces, the majority of the civilian staff, and the entire anomaly research team, but he wasn't solely to blame--alcohol was.

When he got drunk, he would start trying to pick up anything (and everything) with two legs. Drunken Stephen was the master of "the line". He was, Captain Tom Ryan thought privately, a walking encyclopedia of bad puns, silly jokes and--his own weakness--sexy, irresistibly kinky suggestions.

And, well--with a face that gorgeous, and a body that supple, there were few who turned him down.

Title: Love Affair
Prompt: #19 Abby
Characters: Abby
Rating: PG

Her nose and hands are pressed against the glass, blonde hair falling loosely over her shoulders. Her pink rain-jacket hangs open around her frame as she gapes, open-mouthed, through the pet-shop window.

The gecko, unfazed, stares right back. He licks his eye, and she giggles in ardent fascination. Her eyes move to the chameleon in next terrarium--he rolls a telescopic eye to look back.

When her mother grabs her hand and pulls her away from the store, muttering and complaining like she always does about her stupid, irreverent daughter, Abby Maitland starts to cry. She doesn't want to say goodbye.

She's in love.

These are brilliant. I think I injured myself laughing at the Star Wars one and the Chat-up Lines one is great.

I hope you feel better soon! And don't worry, there'll be another "past challenges" challenge near the end of the year :D
