He smoothes away the lines in Nick's forehead, brushes the hair from his brow. His fingers trace, caress, the stubbled cheek, memorizing every line etched by worry, and hurt, and betrayal--his own rued mistakes. Gently, he smoothes those away, too, wishing he could erase those cares as easily, thoughtlessly, as he put them there.
Not gentle enough--Nick wakes, fixes him with a glare. His hand rests tentatively on Nick's cheek, unmoving; their eyes meet. He pleads without words.
Take me in your arms; hold me again. Let me fix this. Let me love you...
Nick rolls over pointedly, shrugging away Stephen's tender hand.
