Uncle Nick showed him videos of his dad occasionally. In them, Thomas had heard his dad's laughing voice for the first time, seen the excited movements and the way his eyes shone when he leaned into the camera.

Thomas had seen pictures and heard about his dad's adventures since he had been little. He mostly knew what missing him felt like from mum's tears and Uncle Nick's sadness.

Sometimes, he was angry at his dad for leaving them behind - for dying too soon. It seemed unfair that he could stay in those videos, happily petting sedated tigers ever after.

I always cry during video flashback moments in movies. I even sniff my way through that bit in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation... every damn time. Stephen deserves one of those ridiculously carefree, wonky hand held moments, too.
