It was never meant to be like this.

Oh, he'd recognised the risks, long ago. Chasing dinosaurs was never going to be safe. But he hadn't expected to be blindsided by his ex-wife. After everything, after Stephen. Not this.

The flames around them crackled. He couldn't feel anything below his chest any more. All he tasted on his tongue was the coppery tang of his own blood.

"Leave me now," he said. "It's too late, you can't save me, save yourself."

But Connor only looked at him, stubborn and proud. "You stay, I stay."
