The bright decorations on the Christmas tree swirl in Jenny’s vision, the fairy-lights catching on the glass in her hand. It’s her fourth or her fifth, she forgets which, but she never gets drunk at office dos, especially not when the morning after will probably be spent crouched over a creature’s corpse rather than the photocopier.

The music is too loud and Christmassy. She’d be all bah-humbug but Nick is heading towards her, another glass in his hand.

It would be churlish to say no, even if his smile weren’t as bright and glittering as the lights on the tree.
